MARY ILLES

"I credit D. Michael with helping me tremendously with finding my voice as Madame Giry in 'PHANTOM'. As an understudy one has to be ready to jump in at any moment and I feel confident and free with my voice, using the techniques I learned studying with him. D. Michael concentrates on the individual's needs and I have grown as a singer with him, and use his vocalizations continuously when warming up and throughout performances."

"D Michael is truly the most brilliant voice teacher available… His understanding of the voice is unparalleled and so is his commitment to his students. I would be completely lost in the professional world without him, and through the work that we do in his studio; I have managed to stay consistently employed on the Broadway stage. I know for a fact that I would not be able to compete in New York without him. He is like my secret weapon in the battle for artistic employment, and I would highly encourage anyone serious about furthering their career to study with him… I would honestly not be where I am today without him…"

CAROL BURNS

|
"D. Michael was recommended to me by a Broadway professional I admired and after one lesson I was hooked. He looks at each student as a unique person and inspires them to challenge themselves to develop their voice, their (often) hidden talents while discovering the best songs and roles for their personality. He focuses on the technique of muscular coordination and the understanding of how correct vowel/constant connections can expand the volume and allow for greater versatility. Within two classes he pushed me out of my safety alto talk speak and challenged me to be courageous through his warm-hearted humor and caring. He is a true educator and inspiration. He is the rare voice teacher combining technical expertise with a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to put me at ease. He has given me the courage and ease to present my own Cabaret Act at age 70 in New York City. I wouldn't have dared it without him. My friend was right-he is the best teacher in the business- so if you have to- travel from Philadelphia and Boson to study with him, it's not that far and the knowledge gained is well worth it, at any age."
Bio:
Carol Burns has enjoyed a varied career in film, television and on the stage including six years on the Japanese NHK-TV daily show BRUSH UP YOUR ENGLISH. Films include Disney's UNDERDOG, Ben Affleck's GONE BABY GONE, Columbia Picture's 21 and Paramount's THE FIGHTER. Stage roles include PIPPIN/Granny, ANNIE/Miss Hannigan, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST/Lady Bracknell, FIDDLE R ON THE ROOF/Yente, ANYTHING GOES/Mrs. Harcourt, THE WIZARD OF OZ/Miss Gulch & Wicked Witch and FUNNY GIRL/Mrs. Strakosh. Carol will be following in the legendary footsteps of Helen Hayes and Angela Lansbury as she takes on the role of Miss Marple in a summer production of A MURDER IS ANNOUNCED. She returns to NYC this fall where she will continue preparing for her NYC cabaret debut in 2012.

"I first met Michael at a musical theatre audition workshop. We immediately hit it off and his knowledge and professionalism seemed like what I had been looking for, for a very long time. I had gone through way too many vocal coaches, singing coaches, and vocalist instructors to name. I was looking for someone that didn't want to just make my current sound 'pretty'. I was in search of more and when Michael and I began working I understood, finally, what that 'more' was. Michael taught me how sound was not only produced in my body but how it was released and how I could get out of the way (mentally/physically) and let the sound fully live. We worked my instrument to new natural heights! I was wonderfully surprised that understanding the mechanics of vocal production could lead to such powerful, pitch perfect tones. I am a true believer in Michael's technique and constantly look forward to our work sessions. If you are looking for more than someone to stroke your ego and let you sing pretty at every work session, if you are ready to produce and understand your instrument and let it work for you I highly recommend seeing Michael."

LESLIE KRITZER

"I have been working with D. Michael Heath for over 16 years. Since the moment I walked into his studio in college, I knew that we were going to cultivate a special working relationship. Michael's first priority was to show the detailed anatomy described in the pedagogy books so that I would understand what was physically happening inside my body when I sing. It was set from the beginning that there is a science to singing and it laid the ground work to develop good technique which is the key to a long and healthy career no matter if you're in a rock musical or an Opera. As a performer himself he really understands what the lifestyle of a singer is like and has given me invaluable advice over the years based on his experience and working with some of the best people in the business. His passion for teaching is unparalleled and he is like no other teacher I have ever worked with. We have a system when we work which I like to call "mapping out". We go through the each piece of music I'm working on and map out exactly what I'm going to do in the piece. How to color words a certain way in order to achieve tone, pitch and various colors, where to breathe and how to phrase in order to achieve the overall style and arch of the song. Michael has the ability to go through a piece of music in this manner to better understand your voice so you may use it to its fullest potential. It's a pretty amazing gift and it's something I will use for the rest of my life. He has been there for me every step of the way with my career and in many ways I could not have gotten this far without him. He is in my opinion, the best teacher in New York."

"I started voice lessons with Michael about three months ago. I explained to him my interests in musical theater and what I hoped to accomplish. He is very understanding and has been helping me with exercises to make my voice stronger every day. As I am from Argentina, English is my second language and Michael has been very good at helping me with my accent. I've taken voice lessons before but this is the first time that I've really experienced a change in my voice and I'm very excited to keep growing. I think Michael is a great teacher and is also an excellent person; funny and sweet. He makes me feel very comfortable and I can say that I have an amazing teacher and a friend. Thank you Michael, I'm looking forward to learning more and having more fun!" |

"Working with Michael has made me a singer again. After suffering an intense couple years of vocal injury and illness, I had developed many bad vocal habits as well as lost all my confidence. Through our work, the answers I had been looking for were found. Michael demystifies the voice and how to use it and I now feel that I can approach a song in a healthy, vocally balanced way. I've never felt better about my voice or had more fun singing!!!"

KEVIN CREWELL

"Michael is a chameleon. On any given song, on any given day my issues change. Sometimes I can't quite get the sound I want for the style, sometimes I can't figure out the acting of the piece, and sometimes it's both. No matter the obstacle, Michael has a special ability to adapt to the situation at hand. He can draw upon his many years on a Broadway stage to help me discover the characters point of view. He can draw upon his sometimes freakish knowledge of the human voice, to help me open my upper register with ease and coordination. His biggest gift though, is his commitment and passion to the work. I know that when I go to work with him, I will get nothing less than 110% of his heart and soul. That support is immeasurable when navigating a big audition, or 8 shows a week on a Broadway stage."

LORRAINE VELEZ

|
I began studying with Michael after a three year hiatus from performing. I was a bit apprehensive as I had not sung for awhile and was worried about how things would go. Michael, with his warm demeanor and sense of humor, put me at completely at ease and most importantly, got me singing right away. He asked me what it was I wanted from singing at this point in time. It was funny, because I hadn't actually given it any thought. I just wanted to "get back out there."
Very quickly I learned from Michael that in order to be "out there" I had to be "in here," in my physical body. This meant that I had to actually know what it was that my body was doing. Not just what my body was doing, but also, what my mind was doing while in the process of making sound. Initially, had me watch a video, which I have to say I was a bit resistant to, as I just wanted to get on with the singing. But in fact, the video was extremely useful and full of surprising information about what the body actually does while one is in the process of singing or making sound.
Studying with Michael has been a process of undoing a lot of the bad habits I had acquired over a lifetime of singing. Some of the habits I had acquired were as a result of doing eight shows a week for many years and getting into the habit of trying to produce a fixed sound even when my body wanted to do something else, trying to "make that leap" or "go for the money notes", etc.
He showed me, through the use of video and in class demonstration, exactly what my diaphragm and my body were doing while engaged in the process of making sound. Once I understood what my body was doing, I could just be with my body. I understood that the whole body was engaged and that if I used my diaphragm correctly and just let the air flow I could be present in the moment when it was making sound, not anticipating what it should be doing or contorting my mouth or tongue or any part of me to "make" a sound. I could therefore be more connected as a singer and clearer about what it was I was trying to convey.
I would say that I rediscovered a complete love of singing that had been a little bit burned away. My vocal range has increased tremendously. Almost effortlessly, I sing notes I did not know I was capable of singing, and I don't feel exhausted or like I am straining. It feels completely open and natural.
I think Michael is an extraordinary teacher. He is supportive, has firsthand experience of the demands of performing, and is extremely knowledgeable, generous, compassionate and funny! I am grateful to him more than I can say.

BETHANY MOSES

"It is my great pleasure to write on behalf D. Michael Heath. Currently, I work as a Cantor at the Conservative Synagogue of Fifth Avenue in NYC leading worship services through song. Coming from a background with a B.F.A. in Music and Theater, an M.S. Ed. in Museum Education, and years of professional performing and teaching experience myself, I have had a plethora of opportunity working with a variety of teachers and educators, and have revered many role models. Michael possesses the rare ability of bridging the roles of teacher, mentor, communicator, and friend, together, carefully weaving all of the best attributes of these roles in order to create someone whom I truly respect and admire. Even though, I only have studied with him a short time, his lessons have helped me tremendously in how I visualize my vocal chords, use my breath as its own instrument, and use the text of material to shine through the voice. Michael has excellent teaching standards, is extremely proficient and has such a breadth of knowledge of the physiology of the voice. His confidence mingles with a strong sense of humility that is also extremely rare to find in someone who possesses such talent. He teaches with exemplary knowledge and wisdom with a creativity that surpasses the banal pedagogy so often found in many educators. His approach to teaching voice is creative and lively as well as challenging and serious. He emphasizes the value of hard work, and the importance of "process" rather than product. There is no question that Michael Heath will bring a special influence and inspiration to any student that surrounds him. He will help students find breath, spirituality, wisdom, knowledge and light to their voices."

"From my very first lesson with D. Michael I could tell he was not your average voice teacher. His knowledge of the vocal apparatus and all that connects and supports it was information that I hadn't received from any other voice teacher. Michael it's safe to say I have found 'the one'!"

"D. Michael Heath has both the knowledge of technique and the knowledge of the heart that are the basis of outstanding vocal coaching and teaching. His technique is personal and focuses on healthy production and resonant sound giving the singer a strong foundation to sing all styles of music. His background in the business makes him not only knowledgeable about the technique of singing professionally, but also about the obstacles of singing professionally and how to overcome them. This background makes him an amazing coach for audition material and performance material. For me personally, he has strengthened my technique and my confidence as both a vocalist and an actor. Spending time with him at the piano is always a joy and I highly recommend working with him if you are looking for serious study and support! He'll make you feel like nothing is out of reach :)"

NATALIE JOY JOHNSON

|
Singing has been my favorite thing to do my entire life. But, after having vocal injury shortly after graduating from college, my confidence level for producing a healthy quality of sound was shot. My
passion for singing remained, but some of that passion was replaced by anxiety and doubt.
Then I met D. Michael Heath. For years, I had felt at the mercy of my voice. Will it be there today? Will that note come out?? I am thrilled to say that is no longer the case. Through my work with D. Michael, I have a new understanding about the nature of vocal production and have countless tools to ensure that my instrument is flexible, healthy and always available to me. I am no longer at the mercy of my voice - I am an active participant in creating it, infusing my singing with as much flexibility and creativity as possible.
D. Michael's knowledge of musical material, spanning countless genres, combined with his 30+ years of experience in show business is invaluable resources. His enthusiasm for his craft, and his love for the power of music, infuse his teaching with a sense of excitement and pure joy about the expression that is singing.
It is no exaggeration for me to say that the work that I have done with D. Michael Heath has changed my life. He has not only given me the technical skills to make my singing better - easier, more accessible, and more connected - but, he also has nourished my creativity. He has boosted my confidence level and encourages me to make braver, more specific choices. And, he reminds me to just have fun with it!

"The brilliance of D. Michael's teaching is that it is completely comprehensive. He is a master in helping to navigate through the technical-textual continuum, which ultimately results in a fully engaged, vocally free and exciting performance. Working with D. Michael I now have a much more grounded sense of my instrument. He is able to tailor and personalize every lesson by diagnosing where you are vocally within the first few minutes. Our lessons are incredibly active, thought provoking, and very liberating. D Michael is very analytical, and incredibly specific, but also very warm and lots of fun! Under his tutelage my vocal flexibility and range have grown. I've expanded the vocal colors & timbre, and my ability to achieve a wider range of dynamic contrasts has increased. My ability to switch between musically genres has also greatly improved. Since beginning my studies with him, I have booked more work and had more callbacks than ever before."

He challenged me to come out of my comfort zone and try a new approach to grow my voice. So effective, so powerful, I will not forget what Michael has taught me. NOAH ABERLIN

"After working with Michael for over two years, I have discovered a much deeper understanding of my voice, both physically and artistically. With each lesson I walk away with a larger bag of tricks. Whether it be increasing my range, improving my musicality, or making it easier to break down a song through vowel placement and character choices. All this in a jam-packed hour long session that remains fun and positive. The thing that I really respect and appreciate about Michael is his constant desire to increase his understanding of the human voice. He is always on panels, going to conferences and researching on his own so that he can better serve his students. This is a trait that I respect from any professional. I would recommend Michael to anyone interested in pushing themselves to discover and broaden their vocal performance, and I do! Everyone I know that works with Michael raves about him. He keeps each session fun and energetic and at a price you can't beat!"

NATALIE WAGNER

|
"Before my vocal lessons with D. Michael, I was an actress/dancer/singer who had a lot of passion and dedication to her craft, but who did not meet her full potential. It was not that I was not capable of expanding my range, experimenting with vowel sounds to make my phrasing more connected, or using a supported breath. However, without the training I have received from my teacher as well as my true inspiration to make my work more well rounded and actually fun, I would not be at the Wagner College Theater program or in many of the roles I have played in my undergraduate year. Before my training with Michael Heath, the coordination of my breath, use of the words/text while signing, as well as understanding of the text would not be up to par as they are now. Being a student of Michael's for almost four years, I come away from every voice lesson learning something new. D. Michael is the most compassionate, humble, and inspiring person I have met in this profession we call show business. He is a cheerleader on a good day or bad day (and he seems to make every bad day a little bit better through his encouragement and technique for me to get my voice back on track). As a soprano as well as belt/mixer, my voice has never been healthier or more vibrant. As a performer in this wild world of show business, I am more confident to do what I love. I owe so much of my newfound passion to D. Michael for opening my eyes to the fact that singing can be fun again. Every lesson is a new journey into knowing me as an individual as well as a singer, actress, and well-rounded performer."

"I first met Michael when he was a guest lecturer at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts. I always thought that I was an alto but during our workshop, where he encouraged me to use a variety of vocal exercises; he helped me to realize that my vocal range was considerably more than I had known. He has improved my singing technique and become a true mentor. When I visited New York City he encouraged me to take several Broadway open call auditions. Under his guidance I made it to the final rounds for MOVIN' OUT, CHICAGO, and CATS. Even though I wasn't able to be cast due to my nationality, I learned so very much from every audition and cherish the experiences and memories those auditions gave me. I am a musical theater performer residing in Hong Kong and currently performing around the world in JACKY CHEUNG'S 1/2 CENTURY TOUR. I am so proud to be one of Michael's students."

"Michael Heath is a powerful voice teacher. His immense knowledge and passion about how the voice works and how to keep it healthy are in my opinion unparalleled. He's been around long enough to know that we all learn differently and that different things work for different people and he takes the time to figure out the best way to communicate that to you. I learned and "unlearned" so much in my first couple of lessons. It's really hard to say enough good things."

"I used to hope for good luck and for the muses of music to kick in and help me when I sang. Then I met D. Michael! He has taught me it's a physical process - reasoned and manageable. It's possible to warm up and always sing well even when challenged by less than optimal health or environmental conditions. With D. Michael singing is joyful & perceived problems become opportunities with many, many solutions. I believe D. Michael offers the incredible opportunity to meet your authentic voice, sing in any and all musical styles and most importantly to learn a healthy vocal method that will serve you for a lifetime. I could not recommend him more highly!"

PAMELA BLAKE

"Michael and I first met in 1980 when were fellow performers working with Joshua Logan in MUSICAL MOMENTS, a musical revue featuring the songs from Josh's many films and stage musicals. We have enjoyed a lovely friendship both on and off the stage ever since. We have also shared the stage in numerous industrial shows and musical revues around the world where Michael served as both performer and director. So many years working and being friends. I was always amazed that he was such a fan of other singers, never jealous, always supportive, always non-judgmental and appreciative of all styles of music. As a Juilliard drama major, I always felt my voice was a 'gift' and singing was a natural extension of using that gift. But at one point in my singing career I experienced serious vocal issues that required surgery. Following the surgery my confidence fell and so did my bookings. Knowing Michael was a vocal instructor and technician, I asked my friend for help. Michael went with me to my vocal therapy appointments to meet my doctor in order to understand and coordinate with her a comprehensive plan to restore my singing voice and my confidence. Our work included a series of therapeutic warm up exercises and a healthier approach to the process of breathing and singing. Michael is a friend. I adore him as a singer, respect him as a qualified teacher of many vocal styles and trust him implicitly."

"D Michael Heath has completely changed my entire approach to singing. I came to him with a big instrument and very little technique. Through a combination of detailed technical information and intensely personalized, individual-voice-specific exercises and instruction, he has expanded my range, unlocked new sounds and freed my instrument in ways I did not know were possible. His familiarity with all physical aspects of vocal production enable him to pinpoint exactly what needs to happen to allow my voice to reach its full potential. More importantly, he knows how to explain everything in a way that is easy to understand and allows me to leave a lesson armed with the specific tools and exercises my voice needs. Technical aspects aside, he is one of the most caring people, let alone teachers, I have ever met. He cares not only about your voice, he also cares about you. His love of teaching and watching his students grow and develop makes every lesson an invaluable experience not only for vocal production, but also for the heart and soul."

"When I met Michael at our first lesson, before I knew of his incredible expertise in vocal pedagogy and impressive career as musical performer, I was struck by his warm and friendly demeanor and excitement over welcoming a new student into his roster. Then as we began to work I came to realize that, not only is he a kind and genuine person, this guy REALLY knows his stuff. Though I was no stranger to studying voice and knew the basic fundamentals of voice production, Michael's knowledge was SO specific, down to the anatomy of all of the body parts and organs that go into the creation of sound, that I felt newly invigorated. By having this detailed information, along with the vocal warm-ups he has specifically designed to really stretch and condition the vocal chords, I noticed a major difference in my range and tone and overall vocal flexibility in just one lesson!
In studying with Michael this past year, we have worked on everything from traditional musical theater songs to straight up belt-your-face-off rock tunes. What is so wonderful about Michael is how he embraces all vocal styles and can apply his vast knowledge of the human voice to insure that his students can achieve a certain vocal style in the healthiest way. Michael is a truly gifted teacher and it is apparent that he loves what he does. Whether an amateur singer or professional vocalist, I believe everyone has something to learn from Michael Heath."

GERI BROWN

"D. Michael is a brilliant person, who is honest, relatable and happens to be the quintessential voice teacher in New York City. I began working with D. Michael after a time of vocal disappointment. Within the four years I was living in New York I had worked with ten different voice teachers. Through my experience I felt like the biggest problem with some of the voice teachers I studied with, was that they spoke the language of vocal pedagogy but didn't know how to translate that language to me, their student. So I just kept searching for the vocal teacher who could help me understand my voice and learn how to apply these vocal techniques to my instrument. I was able to find two voice teachers who I thoroughly enjoyed working with; however, due to circumstances beyond my control (and theirs) I was again out of a voice teacher and needed someone to excel my voice to the next level. Then, after some research online I found D. Michael Heath and I decided I'd give him a call. I am not over-exaggerating when I say that on the day of my first lesson my life changed. D. Michael knows how to translate the science and concepts of singing so that the singer can understand and apply these techniques to their instrument. In the amount of time we have been working together he has literally transformed my voice from a rarely consistent all over the place mess, into an athletic instrument, allowing me to sing with versatility, excellent pitch and ease."
